Job summary
The Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology is seeking a substantive part-time (7 PA) Consultant to join a dynamic and forward-thinking team. The department is involved in a range of service developments and is looking for an individual with the skills to support ongoing clinical and academic excellence.
The post is based at Guy's Hospital, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, with a requirement to work at other Trust sites as needed. Clinical duties will primarily include cone beam CT (CBCT) reporting, ultrasound imaging, and radiological interventions.
The successful candidate will provide clinical services for Dental Directorate patients alongside existing consultants. The role includes teaching, training, and mentoring staff, trainees, and students, as well as participation in clinical audit and research.
Applicants should have specialist experience in CBCT reporting, plain radiography, and ultrasound imaging for salivary gland and oral and maxillofacial conditions. Experience managing referrals from a range of dental and medical specialties is required. The role also includes image-guided interventional procedures.
The service receives both local and tertiary referrals from across the South East. The postholder will work closely with dental specialties and the Department of Oral Surgery, contributing to multidisciplinary team clinics and joint interventional and surgical case management.
Main duties of the job
To provide service in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology at GSTFT in accordance with Trust guidelines and strategy of both GSTFT and strategy of KCL Dental Institute.
To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Provide High Quality Care to Patients
The post holder must be dentally qualified and maintain GDC specialist registration in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology and are GDC registered.
To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
Research, Teaching and Training
The post holder must be able
Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trusts translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
Provide high quality teaching to dental undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director.
Act as educational supervisor and appraiser, once suitably trained as delegated by the Clinical Director to ensure external accreditation of training post.
Performance Management
The post holder must
Work with dental, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
Maintain clinical efficiency e.g. LOS reductions, reducing cancelled operations and DNA rates.
Meet quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates.
Participate in financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.
Help to improve operational efficiency e.g. day-case rates, waiting list activity and demand management.
Staff Management
Work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.
Ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for junior clinical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including on-call commitments.
Participate in the recruitment of junior staff as and when required.
Participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.
Be responsible for the annual appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/General Manager.
Governance
Review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director.
Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
Work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the Clinical Director.
Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas.
Ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior clinical staff and updated on a regular basis.
Keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.
Role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Strategy and Business Planning
Participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate.
Represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Director.
Leadership and Team Working
Demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national or local initiatives.
Work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Kings Health Partners as required.
Chair regular meetings for the specialties.
Resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties.
Adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.
Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
Essential
Full GDC registration, Registered specialist in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology, CCST in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology or within 6 months of CCST.
Desirable
Higher academic degree related to Dental Maxillofacial Radiology, such as a MSc, PhD etc, One, or more of the following or equivalent qualifications: FDS RCS MFDS RCS
Clinical Experience and Skills
Essential
oExperience / training such that the applicant has reached at least the standard considered equivalent to that expected after 4 years of specialist training in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology
oExtensive experience of CBCT reporting Ultrasound and interventional radiology
oAbility to independently perform CBCT reporting
oAbility to independently perform ultrasound investigations
Desirable
oExperience of leading a multidisciplinary team
oExperience in training under and post graduates in dental radiology
Worked with specialist in oral surgery and oral medicine in joint clinics managing Head and Neck cancer patients and patients with salivary gland diseases
