The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. (TPMG – Kaiser Permanente Northern California) is one of the largest medical groups in the nation with over 10,000 physicians, 21 medical centers, numerous clinics throughout Northern and Central California, and an over 80-year tradition of providing quality medical care. We are seeking a highly motivated Emergency Medicine physician to join our Junior Faculty Fellowship in Clinical Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in the California Central Valley.

TPMG Junior Faculty Fellow – Medical Education & Healthcare Simulation with Focus in Global Health

Opening in Modesto/Manteca, California

This 12-month faculty development opportunity is designed for physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency and seek advanced training in clinical point-of-care ultrasound, ultrasound education, quality assurance, research, and POCUS program leadership. The Junior Faculty Fellow will join the Kaiser Permanente Central Valley Emergency Medicine Residency Program and work alongside experienced POCUS faculty, clinician-educators, residency leadership, and regional educational leaders within Kaiser Permanente Northern California. The fellowship combines active clinical practice and bedside teaching with protected professional development time dedicated to high-volume POCUS experience, advanced ultrasound applications, education, scholarship, quality improvement, and administrative leadership. The program is designed to prepare graduates for future roles as POCUS directors, ultrasound fellowship faculty, clinician-educators, and physician leaders in point-of-care ultrasound within integrated healthcare systems and academic Emergency Medicine.

Position Structure

The fellow will be employed full-time and split time between:

Clinical Emergency Medicine

•        The Junior Faculty Fellow will practice clinically within the Kaiser Permanente Central Valley Emergency Departments, primarily at KP Modesto and KP Manteca.
•        Providing high-quality emergency medical care within TPMG’s integrated healthcare delivery system.
•        Working approximately two Emergency Department shifts per week, adjusted as necessary to meet the 0.5 clinical FTE commitment.
•        Supervising and teaching Emergency Medicine residents, medical students, and other learners during clinical shifts.
• Providing bedside POCUS instruction, feedback, and supervision.
•        Integrating evidence-based POCUS into clinical decision-making and patient care.
•        Participating as junior faculty within the academic mission of the Central Valley Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

Clinical POCUS & Professional Development

•        Protected fellowship time will provide structured training in advanced point-of-care ultrasound and progressive development as a POCUS clinician-educator and leader.
•        The fellow will participate in a longitudinal curriculum designed to align with applicable ACEP and Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC) standards.
•        Clinical Ultrasound Experience: The fellow will develop a broad portfolio of independently performed and supervised POCUS examinations.
•        POCUS Education & Teaching: Development as a POCUS educator is a central component of the fellowship.
•        Image Review, Quality Assurance & POCUS Operations: The fellow will develop practical experience in the development and administration of a high-quality institutional POCUS program. This includes developing familiarity with institutional processes for POCUS credentialing, privileging, documentation, billing, and compliance, as well as participating in initiatives designed to improve POCUS utilization, image quality, documentation, and patient care.
•        Research & Scholarship: Development as an educational and clinical scholar is an integral component of the fellowship.
•        Leadership & Professional Development: The fellowship is designed not only to develop advanced sonographers, but also to prepare physicians to lead POCUS programs.

The fellow will be expected to attend at least one national POCUS or Emergency Medicine conference during the fellowship year, such as meetings sponsored by ACEP, AIUM, SAEM/SCUF, or another approved professional organization. The fellow will also be encouraged to participate in regional and national POCUS teaching activities and develop a professional network within the broader ultrasound education community.

Typical Fellowship Schedule

The fellow’s schedule will be structured to provide approximately equal clinical and fellowship/professional development time. A typical schedule may include:

•        Clinical Emergency Medicine: Approximately 2 ED shifts per week
•        Dedicated POCUS Scanning: Approximately 1 supervised scanning shift per week
•        Image Review/QA/Didactics: Weekly
•        Research & Scholarship: Approximately 1 day per week or equivalent protected blocks
•        Curriculum Development: Dedicated longitudinal time, including approximately 1 focused day per month
•        Regional/National Professional Development: Conference and teaching participation incorporated throughout the academic year

Specific schedules may vary based upon clinical needs, educational activities, research requirements, and fellowship opportunities.

Compensation & Benefits

The fellowship provides:

•        Annual salary: $135,000
•        Four weeks of paid vacation

•        $1,500 educational/professional development fund to support approved conference travel and educational activities

Additional terms and benefits are subject to applicable TPMG employment policies and the terms of the individual employment agreement.

Required

Candidates must:

•        Hold an MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
•        Have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program or an approved equivalent.
•        Be board eligible or board certified in Emergency Medicine, as applicable.
•        Hold or be eligible to obtain an unrestricted California medical license.
•        Demonstrate a strong interest in clinical point-of-care ultrasound and development as a clinician-educator.
•        Demonstrate commitment to teaching residents and medical students.
•        Possess strong communication, collaboration, and professional skills.

Preferred

Competitive applicants will demonstrate one or more of the following:

•        Significant POCUS experience during residency.
•        Completion of an Emergency Medicine residency ultrasound track.
•        Previous experience teaching POCUS to residents or medical students.
•        Experience with POCUS quality assurance or image review.
•        Previous educational, quality-improvement, or research scholarship.
•        Experience with ultrasound-guided procedures.
•        Evidence of leadership within residency, medical school, or professional organizations.
•        Interest in pursuing a long-term career in POCUS education, program leadership, academic Emergency Medicine, and/or TPMG.
